My 18 year old son just bought a brand new Kawi ZX6. I am not sure he will live to see 19 years of age! I really tried to advise him against it, but he is 18 and there is not really anything I could do. I have been riding motorcycles for over 30 years, started as did most of us on the dirt bikes. He has zero years of experience on the street, and only a handful of times on the dirt. He took a basic safety course…but I wanted to encourage him to take an advanced course. Can any of you recommend a good class in the San Francisco Bay Area? Within seconds of hearing that he bought this rice rocket, I could feel the grey hairs sprouting out.
@Michael
I understand your concerns. A 600cc sportbike can be tempting for a beginning rider.
While I don’t have specific recommendations for assistance in the Bay area, I would recommend this: Contact a local MSF instructor and ask if he/she knows anyone that might give your son private lessons. I have done this in the past, and was very pleased with the response.
You CAN find someone that understands your concerns and would love to help your son. Don’t give up until you do! This would most likely NOT be official MSF course, but instead an instructor that would help ‘on the side’.
It all started at 12 when I was forbidden to ride a motorcycle. I had a passion for riding then... as much as I do now. All I could negotiate at the time was an orange Honda Express. continue reading...

"Your Riding Tips are extremely helpful. A few forums or sites dwell on accidents and rider mistakes. Motorcycle Mentor doesn't do this. I think Motorcycle Mentor will help me become a capable bike owner."

"Since I just got into the sport -- I LIKE IT ALL. I'm learning everything. By the way, I'M 60 SOMETHING, WISH I WOULD HAVE DONE THIS 40 YEARS AGO."

Sounds like a great gift idea to me.
